Today marks the release of "Frank Zappa,
obra lírica complete", published by Libros del Kultrum. This
volume compiles Zappa’s entire songbook in a critical bilingual
edition, which I have edited. It includes introductory essays
detailing the context behind each album’s production, alongside
over 650 footnotes that clarify the meaning of the songs, their
historical, political, and cultural references, as well as some
insights into translation choices.
In addition to the general
introduction, the book features a superb foreword by Julián
Hernández (whom I deeply thank for his enthusiastic agreement
to write it), which highlights the literary significance of
Zappa’s lyrics. And, of course, my gratitude goes to Julián
Viñuales, whose unwavering support and enthusiasm over the years
have been invaluable throughout the creation of this volume.
The publication of Zappa’s songbook is as groundbreaking as
the exclusive cover image—a previously unreleased photograph
from Sam Emerson’s archive, made available for this edition.
This is the first time the complete lyrics of one of the most
brilliant musicians of the 20th century are available in both
Spanish and English.
It’s both an honor and a privilege—though
also a responsibility—to bring Zappa’s work to a wider audience.
His legacy continues to expand with time, and despite having
passed away more than thirty years ago, his cultural figure
remains more significant than ever. When I published my first
book about him in 2006, there were only a few references to
him in Spain. This is my fifth publication on Zappa (either
as author or editor/translator), and I like to think that my
work has helped close that gap, ensuring he’s no longer the
great unknown he once was. Anyone who explores the lyrics in
this volume will discover an expansive, fascinating, and often
hilariously witty world. Fun is guaranteed. Isn’t that amazing?
