It's 13 vears since the Mothers of Invention burst on the rock scene trying to freak out the establishment and the hippies all at once. Judging from Frank Zappa's appearance at the Capitol in Passaic over the weekend, not much has changed in his act, the times have just passed him by. (read more)
[...] Frank Zappa has simultaneously paying homage to and
subverting the rock tradition for over two decades, and his
long set on Monday night at the Arts Center proved that he still
has his rock basics down, and is still close to sacriligious
in his lyrics and parodies of pop genres, With two guitarists
in the front line with him, Zappa and his cohorts peeled off
some exciting solos, the band manuevered through Zappa's obstacle
course chords and rhythm changes with high elan, and the rhythm
cooked mightily.
As for the lyrics, they careened wildly too, between the ridiculous,
the malicious, the lewd and the downright obscene. Suffice it
to say that Zappa's ribald sense of humor can not conveyed in
the pages of a family newspaper.
