The Advovate is a student newspaper of The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. The Advocate was founded in 1930 as The Panther Cub. In 1958 it was renamed The Panther, and in 1974, it became The Advocate.

Zappa is Misunderstood

Zappa didn't receive any recognition until early in 1974 when "Apostrophe" was released containing his first single "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow". Many people assumed that this was his first recording and that Zappa was new on the music scene, when in reality was his tenth anniversary in the recording industry. (read more)

It is doubtful whether Frank Zappa would have produced a record such as Roxy & Elsewhere a few years ago. He has recently become much more buddy-buddy with the listening public, losing a lot of the contemptability so prevalent in albums of the mid-60's. (read more)

The Valley Girl Mirrors The Eighties

Without a doubt, this summer's most audible slang was "Valley," and even though the San Fernando Valley is all the way across the country in California, teenagers up and down the East Coast were also things like "Grody to the Max" and "Gag me with a spoon." You couldn't turn on the radio without hearing the Valley Girl's nasaly tales of dirty dishes and gay English teachers. (read more)
